Literacy Volunteers Honors Community Partners at Annual Recognition Night
Stamford, Conn. (July 2, 2024) – On June 18, Literacy Volunteers at Family Centers (LVFC) celebrated its participants, volunteer tutors, and community partners during its annual Recognition Night. Held at the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford, this special evening recognized the commitment of students striving for English language proficiency and workforce readiness, as well as the invaluable contributions of volunteer tutors. Family Centers’ support staff and a variety of community partners were also honored for their commitment to the program.
At the event, LVFC presented three organizations with its Community Partner Award. The Ferguson Library, along with CEO Alice Knapp and ELL, Citizenship & Cultural Programs Manager Yelenda Klompus, were recognized for referring Stamford residents for English language instruction and the library’s commitment to offering diverse community programming.
The YWCA of Greenwich was commended for providing free swim instruction to LVFC students and their children, which addresses the critical issue of accidental drowning among those with limited English proficiency, YWCA President & CEO Mary Lee. Kiernan and Aquatics Director Shauna Sudderth were on hand to accept the award.
The Reading Champions Program through the Greenwich United Way was celebrated for its involvement in LVFC’s Family Literacy program at New Lebanon School. Throughout the school year, Reading Champions Volunteer Athena Lagoros engaged children in Program in literacy weekly activities.
The 2024 Family Centers Partner in Excellence Award was presented to Jessica Montgomery and Darian Jones of the Family Centers’ Reaching Independence Through Employment/Pathways to Employment Growth programs for their role in helping LVFC students gain English proficiency and workforce readiness through guidance, career counseling, and networking support.
The Family Centers Collaborative Support Awards honored the Palmer’s Hill Client Support Specialist Team of Moriah Carvajal, Maynely Rodriguez, and Iris Del Poente for their consistent support of the Literacy Volunteers program during busy testing periods by providing comfortable spaces and program information. Family Centers Health Care Manager Gigi Chaux received the Partner in Healthcare Training Award for her guidance and support during study sessions for healthcare certifications, which significantly contributed to the success of professional certification students.
