At its 121st Annual Meeting on Oct. 23, Family Centers recognized a longtime Board Member with an unparalleled passion for the education of young children. The agency also honored a community group whose volunteer and philanthropic efforts have impacted so many of Family Centers’ programs.
For 35 years, Bunny Weicker of Greenwich has worked to ensure that the children of Greenwich received the educational foundation they needed to succeed in school. Since joining the Board of Directors in 1977, Weicker has placed a special emphasis on the agency’s programs that serve children. She regularly volunteers at the Greenwich Head Start preschool, and aims to empower its parents through the school’s Parent Advisory Board
To thank Weicker for her many contributions to the agency, Family Centers presented her with the 2012 Helen Gratz Rockefeller Outstanding Volunteerism Award. The award is presented annually to a member of the Family Centers Board of Directors, and is the agency’s highest honor for volunteer work.
“Bunny has invested more energy and love in Family Centers’ classrooms than anyone I know,” said Joan Melber Warburg, a former Board Chairman and past recipient of the award. “Whether reading a story to an eager group of children, helping to assemble a puzzle or working with the Parent Advisory Board, Bunny has warmly touched the lives of hundreds of children.”
The congregation of First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich was also named Family Centers’ 2012 Family Champion. The annual award recognizes an individual or group whose actions significantly and positively impact the families and children Family Centers serves. Over the years, parishioners from First Presbyterian Church have participated in volunteer projects to benefit Family Centers’ preschools and organized toy, clothing and food drives for families in need. Last year, First Presbyterian Church also made a large donation to help Family Centers complete work on a new, state-of-the-art playground at its Arch Street Preschool.
“First Presbyterian Church has demonstrated that through the spirit of partnership, wonderful things can happen when organizations work in concert to tackle identified needs,” said Bob Arnold, President of Family Centers. “First Presbyterian Church has helped us achieve our mission in multiple ways, and has shown they are indeed a Champion for Families.”
