Second Annual J.R. Schoen Children's Walk to Benefit Center for HOPE
Friends and family of J.R. Schoen will put their "best foot forward" to celebrate the life of a courageous boy who battled brain cancer and raise funds for the Center for HOPE and The Den for Grieving Kids. The Second Annual J.R. Schoen Forever Memorial Walk is set to take place on Sunday, Oct. 11 - the day the Holmes School student would have turned 11-years old.
The JR Forever Memorial Walk was established in 2008 as a vivid reminder of an active young boy who relished sports and neighborhood gatherings. "Our goal is to remember our special friend by bringing together families in our community and raising funds for causes that directly impact the lives of children," said Kimberly Servas, one of the organizers of the event. "It is especially meaningful to be able to hold the event on JR's birthday and in a place he loved so much. The out-pouring of support from so many here in town has been truly amazing."
The event begins at 1:15p.m., with registration opening at 12:30 p.m. at Pear Tree Point Beach. Children are invited to walk with their parents for a minimum donation of $25 (parents walk free). In addition to raising funds for the Center for Hope and The Den for Grieving Kids, the walk will also benefit Darien Little League.
Registration forms are available now at all school offices, Town Hall and www.jrschoen.org/walk and should be returned by October 5, 2009. Day of event registration is available, however, the first 300 children will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Adult supervision is required. Strollers and wagons are welcome.
The walk's route will take families up Pear Tree Point Road to Long Neck Point Road, and back around to the beach for approximately 1.5 miles. Participants are encouraged to carpool as parking is limited. The event will take place rain or shine.
The festivities will continue at the beach following the walk where the Picnic Man will host a wide array of games and activities for kids of all ages. For more information, visit website http://www.jrschoen.org.
