Family Centers’ Celebrates 10 Years of School Readiness

In recognition of the 10th anniversary of Connecticut’s School Readiness initiative, Family Centers will hold a special breakfast at its Head Start preschool at Armstrong Court on Thursday, April 26 at 10 a.m.

Jointly funded by the State of Connecticut’s Departments of Education and Social Services, the initiative was developed in 1997 to make high-quality school readiness services available to more young children across the state.

At the event – which will be attended by local and state legislators, members of the Greenwich Board of Education and other municipal dignitaries – Family Centers will celebrate the success of children enrolled in its own School Readiness program.  Several parents will be on hand to share how the program has helped improve their children’s social and cognitive skills.

But with fewer dollars allocated to School Readiness programs in Greenwich this year, Family Centers’ program faces an uncertain future.  If additional state funding is not secured, Family Centers may not be able to sustain its School Readiness program past the summer.

Since opening in February 2006, Family Centers’ School Readiness class has helped prepare dozens of children living in Greenwich public housing complexes for kindergarten.  The class’ comprehensive curriculum teaches children to understand letters, numbers and how to interact in a classroom setting.  Teachers also cover speech development and help children of immigrant families learn English.
