For the past several months, the Junior League of Greenwich has hosted Information Exchange to benefit families participating in Family Centers’ Head Start and RITE programs. This month’s program featured a tour of the Greenwich Library and a presentation by Community Answers, an agency that has provided local residents with information and referral services for over 30 years. A central hub for reading and relaxation, the Greenwich Library offers a vast array of resources for area residents. Information Exchange participants had an opportunity to learn about the library’s ongoing offerings and were encouraged to utilize the library’s resources and services. Following the library and Community Answers presentations and a tour, the occasion created an opportunity to award 35 RITE Bilingual Computer Training Program graduates with certificates of completion. Families of graduates were present to celebrate their loved ones’ achievements. Past Information Exchange sessions have included presentations on home ownership and housing resources, the Greenwich Public School system and Town of Greenwich services and programs. The Junior League of Greenwich hopes to provide residents of public housing and RITE program participants with useful and relevant information that breaks down communication barriers and opens up opportunities to enhance their quality of life. Cathy Youngman, the Junior League’s Information Exchange coordinator and other Junior League volunteers work with the Head Start director, Megan Sweeney and RITE program manager, Donna Spellman, to organize these pertinent and interesting forums that include experts from area organizations and agencies. These forums, held at the First Steps Center at Armstrong Court, typically attract 50 or more enthusiastic attendees and their families who enjoy a buffet dinner and time to socialize. Adults participate in the information forum while Junior League volunteers provide childcare or homework assistance in an adjacent room. The Junior League’s Information Exchange has become a monthly family affair! Last spring, the Junior League of Greenwich organized a series of three projects to benefit Family Centers’ Head Start program, including a clothing drive, family buffet night and Kids Corner Preschool “classroom makeover.” As the Junior League’s presence and involvement with the public housing community continues to expand, the “buzz” about the value of their community projects and Information Exchange has gotten around the Armstrong Court community. Family Centers extends many thanks to the Junior League of Greenwich for its continued support of its fellow citizens. For information about the Information Exchange, contact
