March 9, 2004 "Kappa Alpha Theta Grant Supports Den"

ImageWith all of the afternoon traffic on the parkways and highways, one might think that every kid in Fairfield County is traveling to his or her after school activities. For some children, getting a ride to an important event or school meeting is a bit of a luxury.  Thanks to a grant from the Fairfield County alumnae chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta, a group of Stamford children and their families who participate in support groups at The Den For Grieving Kids can be assured a safe and timely ride to Greenwich.

Since 1999, Kappa Alpha Theta has supported The Den with a grant of over $5,000 to help pay the transportation costs for needy families who would not otherwise be able to get to and from The Den’s evening support programs in Greenwich and Stamford.  The Den is a comprehensive bereavement support service for children whose family member has died.  For those children whose lives are complicated by financial hardship, domestic violence or other family stresses, The Den provides a supportive place to befriend other children who have experienced a similar loss.

In addition to evening support groups for families, The Den currently offers school-based support groups for teenagers at six area middle and high schools, including Greenwich High School, New Canaan High School, Westhill High School in Stamford, Brien McMahon High School and Ponus Ridge Middle School in Norwalk and Tomlinson Middle School in Fairfield. The Den staff collaborates with school social workers, guidance counselors, principals and faculty to provide this confidential support service during the school day to students who are grieving the loss of a family member or friend.
