July 17, 1997 Darien steel band drums up money for Family Centers It all started one day three years ago when two Darien couples, Bob and Barbara Wells, and Jim and Vicky Linville, went on a'bicycle tour through Maine. "We were biking along a quiet road in this little town, when suddenly we heard this amazing music," Barbara recalled. "We stopped at this building where a steel drum band was playing. When we heard that sound, we fell in love with it." Several weeks later, the two couples started playing together and the Blue Flames Steel Band was born. The band has been performing at clubs, parties and events throughout the area for the past two years, including regular appearances at the Noroton Yacht Club, the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk and the Noroton Bay Association's annual Beach Party. All of the proceeds go to charity. To date the band has raised over $35,000 for charity through concerts, fund drives, and sales of its newly released CD. The two principal charities which receive the band's proceeds are the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (The Linville's son Nat has diabetes) and Family Centers Inc. (the Wells' two children David & Sandy were adopted through the agency). The Blue Flames repertoire of songs has grown from 12 to more than 40 during the past two years, and spans a variety of styles including island classics, reggae, Brazilian, South African, Gospel, Motown and classical. The band has been getting more exposure recently with the release of their new CD titled "Limin". The disc is representative of the band's many styles and is a great all-out first effort. All of the band's concert proceeds and CD sales go to Family Centers Inc. and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. The Blue Flames CD "Limin" is available at the Darien Cheese Shop, Glenn Liquors, Fairbanks Photo, Rowayton Hardware and the Bedford Sportsman.
